Collaboration

What a week! The first development week for Couldn’t Care Less has flown by. Hard to believe that 3 years ago Couldn’t Care Less was just an idea and a few notes on one side of A4 paper. As we sat around the table together for the first time on Monday for a read through of Morna’s text and talked through the model of Alice’s set design, the room was bubbling with excitement.

We’ve had an amazing week of dance training with Malcolm, devising and expert input.  Meanwhile Alice has been busy in the next room building the set and Callum has been tapping away on his laptop organising publicity and arrangements for the tour. We’ve been able to spend a lot of time this week developing the relationship between Elspeth and Lilly, the mother and daughter in the play, which is going to provide a strong foundation for when we devise more scenes next week.  We’ve also had a taste of how devising with a writer will work, with devising informing text and text informing other verbal and non verbal improvisations. The movement sessions have also lead to ideas for scenes and a stronger idea of Elspeth and Lilly’s history and personalities.

Some of my friends who know me to be a bit of a control freak at times have wondered if I’ll manage to let go of the idea I conceived and share control of its development with other people. The truth is it’s been really easy. The heart of the original idea is still there and just growing. I couldn’t be happier with how the play is developing, I couldn’t have done it by myself and even if I could it wouldn’t have been as fun as working together to create it. We have so many extremely talented people working on the show and it’s been great this week to see how each person’s contribution is helping to craft the play. I think we have an incredible few weeks ahead of us and can’t wait to see how the play will turn out!
